Indonesian Press Secretary: Look for Dufi Journalist Killers !!

Buletin Nasional. The death of senior journalist Abdullah Fithri Setiawan alias Dufi added to the long list of Indonesian journalists who were victims of violence. Since the case of the murder of Bernas journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin alias Udin, the culprit has not yet revealed, now a similar incident is happening again.

Dufi was cruelly and sadistically killed, his body was put into a drum after being tortured with cuts in the neck and back, and bruises on the front and back of the body.

This case also invited strong reactions from various parties. Not to mention the Indonesian Press Joint Secretariat (Sekber), a forum for the solidarity of nine press organizations in the country, expressly strongly condemning the acts of violence perpetrated by the perpetrators of the deceased Dufi.

The Indonesian Press Secretary stated deep condolences over the death of the deceased Dufi.

"The police must immediately move quickly, hunt down and arrest the perpetrators of the heinous murder. Also, the motive behind the incident must be completely revealed, and must be subject to maximum sanctions according to the applicable law, "Wilson Lalengke, Chairperson of the Indonesian Press Secretary through a press release signed with Secretary Hence Mandagi, Monday (11/19/2018).

Indonesian Press Secretary considers that violence against journalists must be stopped immediately. Protection of journalists as a guarantee of press freedom as regulated in Law No. 40 of 1999 concerning the Press, should be the responsibility of the Press Council.

"The Indonesian Press Secretary considers that the Press Council has failed to carry out its function to guarantee press freedom, because until now violence against journalists continues to occur in this country," said Lalengke who was the 2012 PPRA-48 Alumni of Lemhannas RI.

As a follow-up to the violence and criminalization of the Indonesian press, the Indonesian Press Secretary is scheduled to bring all the problems of the Indonesian press to the House of Representatives Commission III through members of the DPR from the Gerindra Party faction Sufmi Dasco.

"We will ask the Indonesian House of Representatives to immediately carry out the RDP, inviting all relevant parties to discuss this problem of the Indonesian Press. Criminalization and violence against journalists must be stopped !, "concluded the Chairman of the Joint Secretariat who was also the PPWI Chairman.

Separately, Indonesian Press Secretary Legal Counsel as well as legal practitioner Dolfie Rompas, S. Sos, SH, MH also expressed their condolences over the events experienced by Dufi journalists.

According to Rompas, the death of the deceased Dufi has a common thread with all the actions of the Press Council which have not been able to provide protection for the press.

"The Press Council did not show a clear performance to protect Indonesian journalists, so there was no legal protection for Indonesian journalists. "In fact, the Press Council seemed to protect the parties who felt disadvantaged by the news, and that it had an impact on the more courageous individuals involved in carrying out acts of violence against journalists as a reaction to the news that was considered detrimental," explained Rompas.

Rompas also professionally criticized sharply the performance of the Press Council which seemed to pass through the omission of various cases of violence against journalists in Indonesia. Legal actions that are appropriate for the treatment of violence against journalists almost never exist.

"The Press Council should have an active role in voicing resistance to violence against journalists, because the uncivilized treatment was very bad for the development of press freedom in Indonesia," Rompas added.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalist (CJP), there were 11 journalists in Indonesia who were killed between 1996 and 2012. And Dufi's death added to the death of journalists in Indonesia due to 13 journalists, after the death of journalist Muhammad Yusuf in a detention cell in South Kalimantan , on June 10, 2018 ago.
